As I have mentioned in a previous column, I taught a power electronics project lab at the University of Colorado—Boulder for the past eight years for Master’s degree students. Aside from teaching power electronics, a big part of this class was teaching industrial practice. I have also been mentoring a young engineer at one of my consulting clients. These young engineers think about and approach engineering problems very differently from how I do. This leaves me wondering why the difference? What is it in our backgrounds and training that differs so much? It also raised for me the question of what makes a good engineer.
