About the Award
The IEEE PELS Award for Achievements in Power Electronics Education recognizes the work of engineers who have shown a major impact on or are groundbreaking for education in the power electronics field.
Award Prize:
- Plaque
- An honorarium of USD 3,500
- Reimbursement of up to USD 1,000 towards the recipient’s necessary conference registration, travel, and accommodation costs incurred to attend the award ceremony

Recognizing Outstanding Achievements
2024 Honoree:
Remus Teodorescu
for pioneering power electronics education in renewable energy applications
Remus Teodorescu received the Dipl.Ing. degree in electrical engineering from the Polytechnical University of Bucharest in 1989, Ph.D. degree in power electronics from the University of Galati in 1994 and Dr.HC in 2016 from Transilvania University of Brasov. In 1998, he joined the Department of Energy Technology at Aalborg University where he is currently a Full Professor. Between 2013 and 2017, he was a Visiting Professor with Chalmers University.
He is IEEE/PELS Fellow since 2012 for contributions to grid converters technology for renewable energy systems. He is current an Editor of Future Batteries Journal by Elsevier and Automotive Innovation by Springer.
He has co-authored more than 10 industry-licensed patents, 500+ IEEE papers and 6 books including “Grid Converters for Photovoltaics and Wind Power Systems” – ISBN 9780470057513, Wiley & IEEE Press, 2011.
He has coordinated many industrial projects including Vestas Power Program 2008-2013 focused on the development of new generation of large offshore wind turbines.
He is the founder and current coordinator of the Center of Research for Smart Battery at Aalborg University focusing on improving the performance of Li-Ion battery packs in transportation and energy sector by using power electronics and artificial Intelligence
He received Istvan Nagy Award by PEMC 2022 for Development of Smart Battery Technology
He is currently the recipient of the prestigious Villum Investigator Project: Smart Battery 2021-2027.
His main current research areas are: Smart Batteries , AI techniques for future BMS, Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) for HVDC/FACTS, Power Converters for PV, Wind Turbines and Battery storage systems.
Eligibility Requirements & Criteria
Eligibility: Any active PELS member is eligible to receive this award. There is no restriction on affiliation, age, gender, IEEE member grade, or nationality.
Criteria: Judging is based on the nominator’s recommendation. The criteria include the work of the nominee which has shown a major impact on education in the area of power electronics or is groundbreaking for education in the area of power electronics, which includes:
- Materials and tools for power electronics education (e.g. software for simulation or visualization, videos, videos, webinars, etc.)
- Teaching activities
