About the Award
The IEEE PELS Technical Achievement Award for Integration and Miniaturization of Switching Power Converters recognizes innovators and researchers who have made outstanding technical contributions to the advancement of power electronic circuits, components, devices, and/or systems toward a higher level of integration and/or miniaturization of switching power converters.
Prize:
- Honorarium (USD 1,500)
- Plaque
- Reimbursement towards the recipient’s necessary conference registration, travel, and accommodation costs incurred to attend the award ceremony (up to USD 1,000)

Award
2026: Stig Munk-Nielsen
For contributions to the integration and miniaturization of high-power converters for industrial applications
Professor Stig Munk Nielsen is a leading researcher in power electronics, recognized for combining rigorous theoretical insight with hands on industrial implementation. Based at Aalborg University, he has built and led a high performance laboratory environment focused on solving real engineering challenges in collaboration with industry. Over his career, he has authored more than 350 scientific publications, supervised 25 PhD graduates, and secured over 40 million USD in competitive research funding as principal investigator. He has also contributed to the professional community through IEEE leadership roles, including serving as General Chair of WiPDA Europe 2026.
His research has delivered major advances in integrated power packaging, particularly in medium voltage SiC power modules. A notable breakthrough is his development of an integrated trace resistor damping technique, enabling reliable connection of multiple 10 kV SiC dies at 7.2kV while eliminating destructive oscillations without compromising efficiency or compactness of the power module.
In high frequency power conversion, he has pioneered transistor based alternatives to vacuum tube systems, introducing innovative modular converter architectures. His work also extends to magnetic component miniaturization, including permanent magnet assisted inductors.
Professor Munk Nielsen’s contributions reflect creativity, technical insight, and a sustained commitment to advancing compact, high performance power electronics systems.
