On occasion, I like to return to first principles to remind myself—and all of you readers—why Empower a Billion Lives (EBL) was created in the first place and why this work matters so deeply. At its core, EBL exists to seed and promote technological and business innovations that can bring reliable electricity to the roughly one billion people around the world who still lack dependable grid access.
Our approach is intentionally practical and entrepreneurial. Every two years or so, we organize a global competition focused on small businesses and innovators tackling energy access challenges in developing regions. The most promising and impactful teams receive prize funding to help scale their ideas into realworld solutions. Over time, this process has created a growing ecosystem of organizations that are rethinking how energy can be delivered to and utilized in underserved communities.
