One of the things I love most about camping in Yosemite is the towering granite outcroppings like El Capitan. Granite rates a seven on the Mohs hardness scale, making it one of the toughest rocks on Earth, second only to a diamond. On one backcountry hike, I climbed down into a dry creek bed and noticed something striking: the closer I got to where water would flow after rains, the smoother the granite became. By the bottom, the rock had been polished to an almost glass-like finish, and this wasn’t just one spot—it was the entire creek bed in both directions. That moment hit me. I was looking at Mother Nature’s masterclass in perseverance. Steady, unrelenting force over immense time had worn down and polished the second-hardest rock on the planet.
