From new product releases to supply chain shifts, the last few years have brought some new momentum to the GaN market, which is projected to rapidly expand over the next few years (not that Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Silicon (Si) are going anywhere [1]). In comparison to SiC and Silicon options, however, there are several unique technologies and manufacturing options that translate to a similarly broad range of end applications. GaN power transistors are offered in multiple structures, with numerous potentials for integration options, and the potential for additional substrates beyond today’s default GaN-on-Si.
This all translates to a breadth of available voltages and specifications—and correspondingly, a wide array of potential end applications. In order to consider the impacts of the technologies, as well as recent market movements, an analysis of GaN beyond the headlines is warranted to better understand the opportunities and future.
