As IEEE and PELS have continued to grow and evolve, we mark the 10th anniversary of the magazine [1] with a demographic look at the publication [3]. Though many aspects of the power electronics community cannot be neatly captured in statistics, IEEE PELS has created four statistical categories of demographic data to focus on for this analysis and to support growth of our community moving forward. Together, let’s look at the authorship of the first 44 issues of MPEL through this lens.
Demographic Standardization
In 2024, IEEE PELS developed a framework for collecting demographic data using self-identified reporting for events, products, and committees, focusing on four key categories as shown in Figure 1. While this data has been collected ad-hoc by IEEE in the past, PELS’ goal was to provide standardized guidance to enable improved tracking of key demographic metrics and thus more effectively monitor trends within our global membership. The anonymized data will be used to better understand how to better support and engage the entire PELS membership.
