Pathways to Recognition: Your Guide to IEEE PELS Awards (Award Review)

Awards are an important form of recognition. The recognition program through awards in the field of power electronics predates the formation of the Power Electronics Council in 1983. For example, the first ever IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Award [1], presented to an individual for outstanding contributions to power electronics, was in 1977. Since 2006, this award has been an IEEE Technical Field Award, before which it was a society-level award.

There are about thirty IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) awards [2] recognizing the outstanding accomplishments and service of its members and other professionals. Awards for students are in the form of scholarships, fellowships, and competitions. Others are achievement awards for young and experienced professionals, corresponding service awards, publication awards, and awards for chapters.
