In this time of political turmoil, economic change and challenge, it’s easy to become disillusioned with how things are going, but I have to say that my optimism for human civilization has never been more alive. Here’s one reason why

In G8 countries—and in most others that have avoided the ravages of one or more of the four horsemen in recent times—a majority of citizens exist in a post-scarcity society of abundance and safety unparalleled in human history. For this, we should thank the innovators, scientists, engineers and the investors who funded both the inventions and the manufacturing capacity to make the stuff that fills fridges, educates, entertains and forms the backdrop of suburban life. Even the politicians who managed not to mess it up should get a mention in dispatches. We are witnessing, and living, the post-scarcity future right now. And it’s good.
