Abstract: (Please note: this webinar is sponsored by PELS TC 5) The rapid adoption of electric mobility—particularly for heavy-duty trucks, buses, and maritime transport—is pushing charging power from hundreds of kilowatts to the megawatt range. While this enables ultra-fast charging and high fleet utilization, it also introduces serious challenges to today’s distribution grids, including congestion, high peak demand charges, voltage fluctuations, and emerging power quality issues. Addressing these challenges requires rethinking both the design of charging technology and the architecture of the surrounding energy system.
This webinar provides a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in high-power EV charging, covering wide-voltage-range converter technologies, modular and reconfigurable topologies, and hybrid modulation strategies. A central focus is placed on integrating battery energy storage and solid-state transformers (SSTs) to enable cost-effective medium-voltage grid connection, reduce grid stress, and enhance charging-hub flexibility. Drawing from recent research and real-world pilot projects, the talk will present both technical insights and techno-economic considerations that are shaping the next generation of charging infrastructure.
