Immersion-Cooled SiC Power Converters: Benefits and Design Considerations

Abstract: (Please note: this webinar is sponsored by PELS TC 11) Immersion cooling is an enabling thermal management and dielectric insulation technology for power electronic converters, especially for high-voltage and high-altitude applications. In this webinar, we will share our experience on multi-physics modeling, design and characterization testing of immersion cooled SiC power converters, and elaborate the thermal and dielectric benefits of immersion cooling, including improved thermal uniformity, reduced semiconductor hot spot temperatures, increased insulation performance, and reduced partial discharge risk.
Yiju Wang received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2022. He is currently a Ph.D. student and grad research assistant with CURENT, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, USA. His research interests include design and thermal management of power electronics systems for EV and data center applications. James Camp received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tennessee Technological University in 2022. He is currently a Master’s student in electrical engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he plans to continue toward a Ph.D. in power electronics. His research interests include power converter and motor driver design and thermal management.
