The PEASA workshop provides a great opportunity and platform for people from industry and academia to discuss potential solutions achieving net zero aviation. Keynote and invited speakers are from key player in aviation industry, top universities and funding bodies, including ATI UK, Rolls-Royce, Collins Aerospace, Honeywell, GE Aviation, NASA, Ohio State University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Manchester, Strathclyde, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Cranfield, Bath, and Nottingham etc.
Welcome Message from the Chair
I am delighted to invite you to attend the inaugural edition of Power Electronics for Aerospace Applications (PEASA) workshop 2023, to be held here at the University of Nottingham, UK. This workshop is organised by the Technical Committee on Aerospace Power (TC11) of the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS). The workshop aims to provide a forum for researchers, engineers, policymakers, and stakeholders to share the latest developments of power electronics technologies for aerospace applications.
The COP26 has set a clear goal of securing global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5oC within reach. To deliver this target, it is critical that the transportation sector speeds up the electrification process. Leaders in the COP26 signed a deal committed to supporting the adoption by UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) of an “ambitious long-term aspirational goal that compatible with net-zero global emission by 2050”. To achieve the target set up at the COP26, innovative technologies and skilled workforce are critical to deliver net-zero emission transport. In that respect, this workshop provides a timely platform for researchers, engineers, policymakers and stakeholders to exchange ideas and identify potential collaboration opportunities.
We are proud to announce that this prestigious event will be hosted by the Power Electronics, Machine and Control (PEMC) research group in Nottingham. The PEMC group has been researching in power electronic and machine drives for more-electric/hybrid and electric aircraft for over 20 years and has become one of the largest specialist research groups globally focussing in this area. The home of PEMC group is a newly established Power Electronics and Machine Centre with 3000m2 lab space and 20MW UK Electrification of Aerospace Propulsion Facility.
The event will take place in the iconic building, Trent Building, of the University of Nottingham. The Trent Building was built in 1928 and inaugurated by King George V in November that year. The University of Nottingham has earned multiple honours for its design and landscaping, and has been awarded the greenest campus in the country in a Green Flag Award as it is centred around a lake and clock tower, and includes considerable parkland flora. The workshop will be hosted in the Senate Chamber where you will find a beautiful view of the lake and high field park.
I would like to thank the local organising committee and the IEEE for bringing this event to fruition in such a short time scale especially my co-chairs, Professor Patrick Wheeler and Professor Jin Wang, as well as my publication Dr. Niek Moonen and Finance Chair Dr. Zhenyu Wang.
