Frede Blaabjerg, Aalborg University-Research and Leadership in Power Electronics: How to find a balance
He was with ABB-Scandia, Randers, Denmark, from 1987 to 1988. From 1988 to 1992, he got the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering at Aalborg University in 1995. He became an Assistant Professor in 1992, an Associate Professor in 1996, and a Full Professor of power electronics and drives in 1998. From 2017 he became a Villum Investigator. He is honoris causa at University Politechnica Timisoara (UPT), Romania and Tallinn Technical University (TTU) in Estonia.
His current research interests include power electronics and its applications such as in wind turbines, PV systems, reliability, harmonics and adjustable speed drives. He has published more than 600 journal papers in the fields of power electronics and its applications. He is the co-author of four monographs and editor of ten books in power electronics and its applications.
He has received 30 IEEE Prize Paper Awards, the IEEE PELS Distinguished Service Award in 2009, the EPE, PEMC Council Award in 2010, the IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Award 2014 and the Villum Kann Rasmussen Research Award 2014. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics from 2006-2012. He has been a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Power Electronics Society from 2005-2007 and for the IEEE Industry Applications Society from 2010-2011, as well as 2017-2018. In 2019-2020 he is serving as the President of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, as well as the Vice-President of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences.
He is nominated in 2014-2018 by Thomson Reuters to be between the most 250 cited researchers in Engineering in the world.
Liuchen Chang, University of New Brunswick-Engage and Volunteer in Professional Organizations for your Career Development
Liuchen Chang received BSc from Northern Jiaotong University (1982), MSc from China Academy of Railway Sciences (1984), and PhD from Queen’s University (1991). He joined University of New Brunswick in 1992 and is a professor in ECE. He was NSERC Chair in Environmental Design Engineering (2001-2007), and Principal Investigator of the 16-university Canadian Wind Energy Strategic Network (2008-2014). He was recipient of CanWEA Templin Award (2010 and 2012) for contributions in wind technologies, Award for Excellence in Applied Research in New Brunswick (2016), and PELS Sustainable Energy Systems Technical Achievement Award (2018). He is a fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering. He published over 370 refereed papers in journals and conferences.
Liuchen has been an IEEE volunteer since the early 1990’s, serving numerous positions at PELS and NB Section, particular for conferences and technical operations. He was the general chair of ECCE 2015, ECCE-Asia 2016 and PEDG 2012. He was instrumental in establishing IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG). He was the chair of PELS TC of Power Electronics in Distributed Generation and Renewable Energy Systems (2005-2008) and PELS TC5 Sustainable Energy Systems (2011-3/2015), and PELS member-at-large (2016-2018). He is PELS VP Conferences (2017-2020), Treasurer of PELS Standards Committee (2008-now), and President-Elect. He has been an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE JESTPE, Journal of Power Electronics, Journal of Power Supply, and Chinese Journal of Electrical Engineering.
Patrick Chapman, Enphase- Transitioning between Academia & Industry
Patrick L. Chapman (S’94–M’00–SM’05) received the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1996 and 1997 and a Ph.D. from Purdue University in 2000. He was the Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Advanced Development of SolarBridge Technologies, Inc between 2009 and 2014. Prior to that, he was Willett Faculty Scholar, Grainger Associate, and Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a Member-at-Large for the IEEE PELS Administrative Committee. He has served as the General Chair for the 2011 IEEE APEC. He has received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award. He was named the Richard M. Bass Outstanding Young Power Electronics Engineer in 2006. His research interests within power electronics include applications to integrated design, renewable energy, electromechanics, automated modeling, hybrid energy systems, and energy harvesting.
Sewan Choi, Seoul Tech- How to Manage Research Activities in an Academic Setting
Sewan Choi (S’92–M’96–SM’04–F’19) received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering from Inha University, Incheon, South Korea, in 1985, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA, in 1992 and 1995, respectively.,From 1985 to 1990, he was with Daewoo Heavy Industries as a Research Engineer. From 1996 to 1997, he was a Principal Research Engineer with Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., South Korea. In 1997, he joined the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Seoul National University of Science and Technology (Seoul Tech), Seoul, South Korea, where he is currently a Professor. His research interests include power conversion technologies for renewable energy systems and dc–dc converters and battery chargers for electric vehicles.,Dr. Choi is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics.
Ahmed Elasser, GE Global Research- Engineering, Innovations, and Publications in Industry
Dr. Ahmed Elasser received his Engineering Degree (Ingenieur D'Etat) from L'Ecole Mohammadia D'Ingenieurs, Rabat, Morocco in 1985 in Electric Power and Power Electronics. He spent seven years in Morocco working for industry and academia as a maintenance and laboratory engineer. He joined Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY on a Fulbright Scholarship in 1992 and completed his MS and PhD degrees in Electric Power and Power Electronics in 1993 and 1996 respectively.
He joined GE Global Research Center in 1995 as a summer intern and is currently a Principal Systems Engineer in the areas of Electric Power, Power Electronics, and Power Semiconductor Devices. He worked on Silicon Power Devices such as IGBTs and IGCTs, Solar Energy, Silicon Carbide, Gallium Nitride, Power Conversion Systems Modeling and Simulation, and Innovation.
He is currently leading the GE Renewable Reservoir Power Conversion components testing and qualification. He published over 40 papers and has 33 patents issued with several pending. Dr. Elasser is a Senior Member of IEEE and a regular reviewer for many IEEE journals and conferences in his area of expertise. Dr. Ahmed Elasser is the recipient of numerous GE Awards for his contributions and innovations over his 24.5 years GE career.
Johann Kolar, ETH Zurich- Anatomy and Physiology of Excellent Research Papers
Johann W. Kolar is a Fellow of the IEEE and has received his PhD degree (summa cum laude) from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria. He is currently a Full Professor and the Head of the Power Electronic Systems Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. He has proposed numerous novel PWM converter topologies, modulation and control concepts and has supervised 70+ Ph.D. students. He has published 880+ scientific papers in international journals and conference proceedings, 4 book chapters, and has filed 190+ patents. He has served as IEEE PELS Distinguished Lecturer from 2012 through 2016 and has presented 20+ educational seminars at main IEEE conferences. He has received numerous awards, incl. the 2016 IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Award, 30+ IEEE Transactions and Conference Prize Paper Awards, and 2 ETH Zurich Golden Owl Awards for excellence in teaching. The focus of his current research is on ultra-compact / ultra-efficient SiC and GaN converter systems, Solid-State Transformers, advanced three-phase inverter concepts for variable speed motor drives, ultra-high speed and bearingless motors / actuators, and design automation in power electronics / mechatronics.

Burak Ozpineci, Oak Ridge National Laboratory- Working with Government vs. Industry Grants
Burak Ozpineci received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, USA, in 1998 and 2002, respectively. He joined the Post-Masters Program with the Power Electronics and Electric Machinery Research Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Knoxville, TN, USA, in 2001 and became a Full-Time Research and Development Staff Member in 2002 and Group Leader of the Power and Energy Systems Group in 2008. He is currently leading the Power Electronics and Electric Machinery Group and managing the Electric Drive Technologies Program at ORNL. He also serves as a Joint Faculty Associate Professor with The Bredesen Center at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Ira Pitel, MagnaPower- Preparing for and Succeeding in a Career in the Industry
Ira J. Pitel received the B.S. degree from Rutgers -- The State University of New Jersey, the M.S. degree from Bucknell University, and the Ph.D. Degree from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1972, 1975, and 1978, respectively. From 1973 to 1981, he worked for GTE Sylvania, Bell Laboratories, and Exxon Enterprises as a research engineer specializing in high-frequency ballasting techniques for gaseous discharge lighting, power distribution, and ac drives. In 1981, he founded Magna-Power Electronics, a company specializing in custom and standard power conditioning products. He is responsible for technology oversight and manufacturing of its line of 1.5-3,000+ kW ac to dc power supplies and electronic loads. In 1986, he joined Texas A&M University as an Adjunct Professor. Dr. Pitel holds 29 patents in the field of power electronics and is co-recipient of the 1995 Society Prize Paper Award of the Industry Applications Society. He was honored as the Rutgers Outstanding Engineering Alumnus in 2000 and with the Gerald Kliman Innovator Award in 2008. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE and has served in many IEEE capacities including Society President of the Industry Applications Society. He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi.
Richard Wainwright, John Deere- Being a Recipient and Agent of Technology Change
Richard E. Wainwright is a Senior Staff Engineer at John Deere Electronic Solutions, where he is involved in the advancement of vehicle electrification. His work at John Deere includes the design and development of both Si IGBT and SiC based inverters, DC-DC converters, and power distribution controllers. He also serves at the Enterprise level in developing and defining guidelines for power quality and system architectures for electrified vehicles. His career includes 15 years in the automotive industry, 7 years in Aerospace and Defense, and 15 years in other industries involved in the design and application of power electronics.
Richard is the inventor or co-inventor on 13 US patents and had his graduate work published in the IEEE Micro magazine (2/85) which featured his model robot on the front cover. Richard graduated from the University of Missouri – Rolla (now the University of S&T) with an MSEE degree in 1983. He received his BS degree in Engineering Physics from Olivet Nazarene University in 1980. In his spare time, he has been involved with mission projects to build schools and churches in Barbados, Guatemala, and Haiti.
