Title: Power Electronics––A destination Few Women Have Gone Before

Dr. Smedley will talk about her trajectory entering the area of power electronics and the exploration together with her crew.

Keyue Ma SmedleyKeyue Ma Smedley received her education from Zhejiang University, China and the California Institute of Technology, USA.

Dr. Smedley was the first woman to enter the Power Electronics graduate program at Zhejiang University, the first woman in the Power Electronics Group at Caltech, and the first woman to start a Power Electronics Laboratory at an academic institute in the United States.

Her research activity encompasses a broad area of power electronics including topologies, modeling, and control of DC-DC, high fidelity-audio amplifiers, single and three-phase universal converters with applications including high speed and power density power processing, dynamic VAR compensation of power grid, active power filters, fault current limiters, etc.

Dr. Smedley is the inventor of One-Cycle Control (OCC) method for high speed and high performance switching power conversion and Hexagram converter for high-power medium-voltage power processing.

Dr. Smedley’s exploration resulted in more than 200 technical publications, more than 15 US and international patents, two start-up companies, and numerous commercial applications.  She is a recipient of the UCI Innovation Award 2005.   Her work with One-Cycle Control, Inc. won Department of Army Achievement Award in Pentagon in 2010.
