Student Travel Grants

The PELS has a travel reimbursement program for students who present a paper at PELS-sponsored conferences and workshops. The objective of student travel grants is to increase student participation at IEEE conferences and workshops.

Selection of Recipients

Travel support recipients will be chosen so that students from as many countries as possible receive support. In case there are more applicants than available funds for travel reimbursement, preference will be given to the best papers according to the review rating and to students who have not previously been part of the program.

How to Apply

Interested students should complete an application on the corresponding conference’s website.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility: To be eligible, students must have a paper accepted and present the paper, be an IEEE Student Member, and be a PELS member. Preference will be given to students who are the first author on a paper and with more than one accepted paper.

Reimbursement of costs will be done after the conference has concluded and students have sent in the necessary reimbursement forms and receipts.

Conferences With Travel Support

PELS provides travel support at other conferences and workshops that are not listed below. Please access the events’ website to see if student support is available.

Travel support of up to USD 1,000 is offered to graduated and undergraduate students enrolled in power electronics programs to help with attending APEC. The program was initiated by the Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) in 2005 and is now jointly underwritten by PSMA, PELS, and the Industry Applications Society (IAS). The recipients are chosen by the APEC Student Travel Support Committee.

Applicants must be either undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in a power electronics program at an accredited institution. Only student authors and co-authors of accepted papers are eligible. Travel support granted to students from the same institution is limited, but the students may share the reimbursement. If there are qualified applications from more than 60 schools, support can be reduced to USD 500 for students in the USA. Students who have received this award in the past are no longer eligible.

The Industry Applications Society (IAS) and PELS provide 30 student travel grants worth USD 500 each to help student members attend ECCE. To qualify, applicants must be either a PELS or IAS Student Member, a presenting author (oral or poster), willing to perform some volunteer duties during the conference, and have full registration. Awards are selected by an IAS/PELS committee based on the qualification and financial needs of the applicant. A check will be issued to the awardees with either a W-9 (for US citizens or permanent residents) or a W-8 (all others) tax form.

PELS supports the travel reimbursement program that helps student members who present a paper at ITEC. This program reimburses up to USD 800 for travel expenses associated with the conference. To be eligible for this program, a student must be an IEEE Student Member, a PELS member, have a paper accepted, and present the paper at ITEC.

PELS has generously provided support to student members to attend IWIPP. To qualify, a student member must be a PELS Student Member, a presenting author (oral or poster), willing to perform some volunteer duties during the conference, and have full registration. Awards are selected by a committee based on the qualification and financial needs of the applicant and will be issued during the conference.

This grant is for qualified student participants at COMPEL 2020 and is made available and managed by the PELS Technical Committee on Power and Control Core Technologies (TC 1) in coordination with the COMPEL organizing committee. It will reimburse up to USD 800 to cover airfare and other travel-related expenses. The number of grants given each year will depend on the available funds and the number of qualified students. Applicants should fill in the form provided on the website.
