Student Branch Chapters
A Student Branch Chapter (SBC) is a technical sub-unit of a Student Branch made up of a minimum of 6 IEEE Student Members or Graduate Student Members of an IEEE Society. SBCs are established by a petition to the parent Student Branch and Society connected to represent and fulfill the needs of the members and IEEE's missions. They can only be established at a particular college, university, or technical institute that has a Student Branch.
A joint SBC comprising of members from more than one Society or Student branch can be established, provided that the petition to establish a joint SBC contains at least 6 signatures and that each Society or Student branch involved will be represented by at least 3 signatures. When creating a petition for a joint SBC, please select the "Section Chapter/Affinity Group Status Change" petition.
More information on creating an SBC or joint SBC can be found in the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Operations Manual.
Resources for SBCs
Best SBC Award: The PELS Best SBC Award was established in 2018 to recognize excellent service by a PELS SBC (also joint with other Societies) to its student members and to the power electronics community.
Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Program: The IEEE DL Program is one of the most exciting offerings available to IEEE Society Chapters. Each year, PELS selects a few members of the profession to be DLs. This not only celebrates and honors their high achievements in the field of power electronics but also supports PELS Chapter activities by providing high-profile speakers for local chapter/section events.
Financial Support: PELS offers a one-time payment of USD 500 to newly established Chapters and SBCs. The Chapter Chair or SBC Chair should complete a form to request the funds. It will be sent via check, wire transfer, or concentration baking deposit.
Chapters and SBCs in good standing can also request USD 250 per year as operational funding to support their activities. To receive this funding, the Chapter Chair or SBC Chair should complete an application and indicate the status and activities of the Chapter or SBC over the past year. The application form and deadline to report the activities are sent to the Chapter Chairs and SBC Chairs by email.
Regional Distinguished Lecturer (RDL) Program: In addition to the DL Program, PELS also offers an RDL Program to support members and local chapters in various regions around the globe. The selected RDLs usually give lectures in PELS local chapter/section events within their region and in a local language.
Student Guidebook: This guidebook was prepared as a reference for students who are eager to establish an SBC at their institution, in leadership positions of a newly founded SBC, and new leaders in an existing SBC. The document concisely answers several questions new leaders may have.
Tool Kits: Chapters and SBCs can request a PELS Chapter Tool Kit by completing a request form.
