Welcome to a new quarterly column, entitled “Empower a Billion Lives,” a phrase that you may have already heard at IEEE events or from colleagues. I’ll take this inaugural column to introduce IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) community to EBL—as we like to call it—and the global problem of energy access, which we seek to address. If you will indulge me, I will take you through my own journey of getting involved with EBL and explain it all along the way.
