The IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) is a society focused on technical expertise and expanding the boundaries of the field of power electronics. This is written into our society’s constitution as a call to “promote a high level of technical excellence among its Members.” Alongside our technical scope is another key phrase in our mission: “through its committees [PELS] shall study and provide for the needs of its Members.”1. As we celebrate PELS’ growing global membership base and ten years of success within one of our key products, the IEEE Power Electronics Magazine, it’s exciting to see that our society continues to evolve this mission in providing increasing support to our members. You can see this evolution in a number of ways in the pages of this edition of the magazine: from celebrating PELS’ impact on expanding energy access with the 3rd Empowering a Billion Lives competition, to recognizing fundamental contributions from chapters/regions around the world including a review of early power electronics activities in Brazil, to examining leading edge applications of power electronics with an article on surgical energy.
